Frederick Cornell (May 6, 1867 - March 6, 1921) was an English soldier, geologist, prospector and author born in Devon, England, and educated at the Bedford School. In 1902, he moved to South Africa and served at Lieutenant with the South African Native Labour Corps during World War I. His short stories, considered to be among South Africa's finest, include this tale from his surreal experiences living among the bushmen.


Frederick Cornell (May 6, 1867 - March 6, 1921) was an English soldier, geologist, prospector and author born in Devon, England, and educated at the Bedford School. In 1902, he moved to South Africa and served at Lieutenant with the South African Native Labour Corps during World War I, and was the first to notify the South African forces that the Germans had crossed into the Cape from German South West Africa. He was an editor of "The Cape Register." His publications include a volume of reminiscences The Glamour of Prospecting (1920) which has become an important eyewitness account of the Herero and Namaqua genocide by the Germans between 1904 and 1908. His collection of short stories, some of which are considered to be among South Africa's finest, are found in A Rip Van Winkle of the Kalahari and Other Tales of South West Africa.

Liam MacKenna grew up in Ballina, along the River Moy, where he spend many a day salmon fishing. He later turned to theatre acting and, eventually, audio narration. He has recorded many of the finest in Irish literature, as well as, a host of trade journals in the US and Canada.
